About Us

Rodbenders Sea Angling Club was founded in 1968 and enjoys and enviable local reputation as a small, but friendly club that encourages enthusiastic competition amongst its members.

We are very active in the Plymouth & District Shore League, with three teams (Rodbenders, Raiders and Rebels) competing in this competition. The club is run on a friendly and informal basis and currently has over 30 active members.

Club History

The club was formed in 1968 as an essentially boat angling club when superb catches were regularly made by those on board any of the fleet of charter boats that fished the reefs and deep water wrecks that lie off Plymouth. However, as costs increased and catches diminished, enthusiasm for club organised boat trips declined and no charters have been undertaken in recent years.

The founder members included Albert Taylor (Chairman), Ed Jackman (Treasurer) Arthur Mills (Secretary) and Peter Lewis. The Club's membership peaked at 79 in 1988, but like many clubs both locally and nationally, members have declined to an extent that many clubs have simply disbanded. Today the membership totals around 40.

The main focus is now shore angling and the club’s record fish lists provide a clear testimony of the successes that members have regularly achieved over the years. The club also participates in the Plymouth & District Shore League with two teams competing in a ten match inter-club competition that extends from April until the following January and has won both the Championship and K.O. Cup on numbers of occasions.
